Control by I-BUS app
If it is ensured that the aux heater was installed and can be controlled with the original radio/navi, the "Parking heater" option can be activated in the other settings of the I-BUS app.
Make sure that the option "emulate MID requests" is NOT activated and the option "aux heating" is activated.
The " auxiliary heating" entry then also appears on the "Control" tab and the " auxiliary ventilation" entry. Both can be started directly via the slider next to it.
Above are two timers for which a start time can be set.
If the timer is set successfully, you can call up the respective start time in the speedometer with large text display (provided the PROG function "TIME1" and "TIME2" are active), which is marked with an star.
The timer is now successfully set. The speedometer takes over the start of the aux heater/ventilation at the set time.
Control with former radio only ex works
Make sure that the option "emulate MID requests" and the option "auxiliary heating" are activated.
On the "Control" page, a large "MID" button appears. After pressing this button, an emulated MID appears, as it was known before. Click on "Clock" to access the menu for setting "TIMER1" or "TIMER2". After the start time has been successfully set, a star is placed in front of "TIMER1"/"TIMER2".
Control by orange Resler Module
The auxiliary heating can be controlled separately from the I-BUS app or with the app with the orange Resler module.
This means even with a radio/navigation system ex works or a third-party radio without Android you can use the aux heater/ventilation via the module with the remote control in the vehicle key (within its range).
Optionally you can also set up to ten timers and thus program a week in advance or repeatedly. This is also possible via an Android smartphone, which is only temporarily plugged in for the purpose of programming and uses the I-BUS app for this (even without a licence!).
The Resler module can perform the control of the auxiliary heating/ventilation.
Initially the type must be defined (especially for control via remote control).
OFF | There is NO control of the auxiliary heating/ventilation. |
type 1 | Only for E38/E39/E53 with high BC speedometer |
type 2 | E38/E39/E53 with Low BC speedometer |
relay | In the E46/E83/E85 the auxiliary heating is controlled via +12V switching signal instead of via the BUS system. With retrofitting a relay (not included) a relay may be switched via ground signal on the green wire from the Resler module. |
To decide which type to set, please check: Habe ich High oder Low BC?
Direct start of the auxiliary heating/ventilation via remote control
The remote control in the vehicle key can be used to start/stop the auxiliary heating/ventilation directly.
Use the slider to determine whether the auxiliary heating or auxiliary ventilation is to be used.
Starting auxiliary heating/ventilation | The vehicle has to be locked. Press and hold the close button on the key for approximately 2 seconds. The start is confirmed visually by 2x "slow flashing". |
Stop auxiliary heating/ventilation | The vehicle has to be locked and the auxiliary heating/ventilation has to be running. Press and hold the close button on the key for approx. 2 seconds. The stop is confirmed visually by 3x "slow flashing". Note: The auxiliary heating cools down with the combustion air fan for approx. 180s so that it does not stop immediately. |
Timer control for auxiliary heating/ventilation
The Resler Module allows pre-programming of up to 8 timers with a lead time of up to one week and weekly repetition beyond that.
Example | Example |
activate/ deactivate timer | Set the slider accordingly. After the timer has run, it is deactivated. |
Start time | Set the start time for the timer |
Duration | Setting the duration of the timer (1-30 minutes) |
Days | Set the days on which the timer should be active |
Weekly repetition | The complete timer is repeated continuously every week as it is set. The option also has to be set if the timer shall run on more than one day. Otherwise the timer will be deactivated after the first run. |
Functional type | The type can be set to auxiliary heating/ventilation or relay. The air-conditioning control unit decides whether ventilation or heating is required based on the outside temperature (16°C is the switchover point). |
NOTE: Since the air conditioning control unit decides which function is to be implemented the timer can usually always be used for the auxiliary ventilation function (except E46/E83/E85) even if no auxiliary heating is installed.
Auxiliary heater in the E46/E83 or auxiliary heater without BUS control
Auxiliary heaters which are not controlled via the vehicle BUS but only via a 12V control signal cannot be controlled via the I-BUS app.
However, there is the option to use the ground switching output (green wire) as well as a suitable relay circuit (miniature relay plus free-wheeling diode!!!!) and to set the module properly.
It is absolutely essential to use only a small relay (not a car relay! - max. 100mA load!!! / at least 250 ohms exciter coil ) with a free-wheeling diode to switch the ground contact on the relay. The supply with permanent positive at the relay and for switching through to the aux heater must be separately arranged and fused! If this is not observed, the module may be damaged irreparably!
Einstellung für Direktstart via FFB muss auf "Relais" gesetzt werden:
relay | In the E46/E83/E85 the auxiliary heating is controlled via +12V switching signal instead of via the BUS system. With retrofitting a relay (not included) a relay may be switched via ground signal on the green wire from the Resler module. |
If the timer is used, the function type must also be set to "relay":
Functional type | The type can be set to auxiliary heating/ventilation or relay. The climate control unit will decide whether to ventilate or heat based on the outside temperature (16°C is the switchover point). |
This implementation has only been done experimentally so far. If you have any questions, please contact us BEFORE the implementation!
Requirements for the control of the auxiliary heating
The requirement for using the auxiliary heater is of course that an auxiliary heater is installed in the car which is controlled via the vehicle's BUS system.
This is the case with all BMW E38/E39/E53 with auxiliary heater ex works.
All diesel engines (M47/M57) have a so-called " additional heater", which is identical in construction to the auxiliary heater. The only thing missing is the appropriate coding and actually a switching valve (where ONLY the passenger compartment is heated).
The factory-fitted auxiliary heater thus only heats the cooling circuit for the passenger compartment - not the engine.
An additional heater coded to an auxiliary heater (or an auxiliary heater with a disconnected changeover valve) heats the small cooling circuit and thus heats the engine and the passenger compartment.
There is also a white "Webasto" sticker in the engine compartment on the right-hand dome. This only says that a Webasto Thermotop C/Z is installed. But it does not say whether it is a auxiliary heater or only an additional heater.
For the sake of simplicity, we will abbreviate " auxiliary heating" with "aux heat" and "auxiliary ventilation" with "aux vent".
NOTE: If the function is set to auxiliary heating on vehicles WITHOUT auxiliary heating and this is started, malfunctions will occur. Often the fan is started and can only be stopped by disconnecting the vehicle battery. Therefore, make sure that a auxiliary heating is present.
A sticker of the company "Webasto" in the engine compartment on the right-hand side of the dome can(!) be an indication of an installed auxiliary heater. However, this is also present if only an additional heater is coded in the case of diesel vehicles.
Control ex works
To be sure that the "Webasto device" also functions as a auxiliary heater, you might want to check the original menu of the MID or the on-board monitor.
In addition to " auxiliary ventilation" (which is always available with the electronic climate control unit), "auxiliary heating" should also be listed and controllable.
In the MID, you will find the option "HEAT" and "VENT" after pressing the clock icon.
If only the auxiliary ventilation is listed here, malfunctions will occur if you try to control the aux heater via the app/module.
Therefore, please make sure beforehand that the aux heater is also coded as such!
Timer: auxiliary heater or ventilator?
The decision whether to heat or ventilate when the timer is activated is made by the climate control unit on the basis of the outside temperature.
For this it is essential that the sensor is intact and plausible values are shown in the speedometer. If the sensor is defective, the speedometer will permanently show "-40°C" and the aux heater will ALWAYS start, regardless of the actual outside temperature.
Abandonment criteria
The STH will be switched off if:
- the coolant temperature exceeds 70°C
- the voltage drops below 10V
- der Tankinhalt unter 7l fällt
- the running time has reached 30min
- there is a defect in the auxiliary heating
